My heart will always belong to Lincolnshire, my greatest inspiration. I grew up in Friskney, which is beside a sea marsh that was used as a bombing range by the RAF. My childhood was filled with the peace of the countryside, and the sounds of war: gunfire on the wind, fighter jets roaring overhead, and the boom of bombs going off in the distance. It’s a unique location – one where the landscape is often squeezed into a few inches, and everything else is endless sky; where the ever-present wind is almost a character itself, tugging at clothes, soothing fevered skin, witnessing everything. Growing up in Lincolnshire has influenced my writing hugely, inspiring murder scenes on Skegness beach, missing girls on Friskney marsh, and the mystery of identical twins who disappear 25 years apart. Discover more about how the local area has influenced my writing during my talk.
